Building A Hero
One of the most frequent questions we get is “where did you get that costume?” The answer is that most of the costumes are bought from companies overseas, most frequently from China. But because TH4H focuses on authenticity, we often have to make some alterations or customize these costumes to fit the performer. We have our own in-house department of craftspeople to do this work. Masks, which are usually sold as a ‘one-size-fits-all’ item, frequently need the most alterations to fit the performer in a manner that looks like the mask was made for that performer.
In the case of our All-American Hero, the shield was created from a blank wooden shield because we wanted a heavier, more solid shield than the pre-made plastic alternatives on the market. The wood blank was meticulously painted and weathered by one of our craftsman to look like the metal original.
Recently, our creative department had to create an entire costume. When a client asked us to provide a certain female heroine for a young child’s party, it became clear that finding a pre-made costume appropriate for the audience would be difficult. Most of the costumes on the market were too revealing or adult-themed. We wanted to remain as true to the costume as possible while also providing a ‘G-rated’ experience for the party guests. So our craftspeople assembled a costume using some pre-made parts in addition to fabricating our own.
Our most ambitious project to date has been creating the costume for our Caped Detective. Boots and belt were purchased pre-made but the other components - most notably the chest piece - have been built from scratch using foam and latex.
We look forward to introducing this new hero to our clients.
